  • Plea in SC seeking probe into ‘encounter’ deaths of Dubey, his aides

    • A petition was filed in the Supreme Court for investigation of encounter killing of Vikas Dubey and his aides.
    • It was filed by the NGO People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).
    • It sought probe by a Special Investigation Team into the killings of Dubey and his associates.
    • It urged the court to constitute a committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge for inquiry.

 

  • History to custom, SC uphold rights of former royals to Kerala temple

    • The Supreme Court upheld the administrative rights of the erstwhile royals of the princely state of Travancore regarding the temple.
    • Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple is situated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
    • The ruling came on an appeal by the legal heirs of the younger brother of the last ruler of the royal family.
    • The appeal challenged the January 31, 2011 judgment of the Kerala High Court.
    • The HC order had directed the state government to setup a trust to control the management and assets of the temple.

 

  • SC declines plea seeking curbs on Amarnath Yatra due to Covid

    • The Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea which sought curbs on this year’s Amarnath Yatra due to Covid-19.
    • The plea sought the court’s intervention to restrain public participation in the Yatra.
    • The court said it is the administration’s duty to decide in this matter.

 

  • SC refuses to cap Covid treatment cost at private hospitals

    • The Supreme Court refused to fix an upper ceiling on the cost of Covid treatment in private hospitals across the country.
    • It said that the Centre needs to take the charge as situation is different in different states.

 

  • Special court extends Navlakha, Teltumbde, detention by 90 days

    • A special court has extended the detention of academic Dr. Anand Teltumbde and activist Gautam Navlakha by another 90 days.
    • As the investigating officer in the Elgaar Parishad case could not “investigate the matter effectively” due to the lockdown.

 

  • TDSAT: No interim stay on Trai direction to telcos to stop premium services

    • There will be no interim stay on Trai’s direction to the telcos to stop the services on its premium plans.
    • Vodafone Idea had approached the TDSAT against a letter written to it and Bharti Airtel.
    • In the letter, the authority had asked them not to go ahead with their premium service offerings for the time being.
    • Trai had received complaints of the new plans “violating existing quality norms”.

  • ‘There is a dichotomy’: SC notice to Kerala on law banning animal sacrifice in temples

    • The Supreme Court issued notice to the Kerala government on a plea challenging a 1968 state law banning animal sacrifice in temples.
    • “There is a dichotomy. Killing animals and consuming is allowed. But killing animals, offering to deity and then consuming is not allowed,” said the CJI.
    • The plea challenges the June 16, 2020 Kerala High Court order upholding the Kerala Animals and Birds Sacrifices Prohibition Act, 1968.
    • It has been filed by a group of people following the Shakteya traditions
    • They argued that the Act is “blatantly discriminatory”.
    • As it applies only to Hindus but does not stop other religions from practising it.
