- Bangladesh executes former Army officer for assassinating Bangabandhu
- Bangladesh executed a former military captain for his involvement in the 1975 coup.
- The country’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in the coup.
- The execution was carried out nearly four and-a-half decades after the high-profile massacre.
- On free tests, Centre tells pvt labs: Will take up matter in SC
- The Centre has assured the labs that it will take up the matter in the apex court in a way that protects “all interests”.
- Following last week’s order, private labs called upon the government to “come up with modalities” so that their service “remains sustainable”.
- SC modifies its order: Free tests at pvt labs only for EWS, PMJAY beneficiaries
- The Supreme Court modified its April 8 order which made COVID-19 testing free in all private laboratories.
- The Supreme Court said that the benefit will be available only to those covered under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), also known as Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
- It said that beneficiaries would also cover other economically weaker sections as may be notified by the government.

- The Supreme Court declined to pass any interim directions on petitions which urged it to ask the Centre to bring back Indians “stranded” abroad.
- SC orders release of those lodged in detention centres for 2 yrs or more
- The Supreme Court directed the release of those declared foreigners and lodged for 2 years or more in the detention centres in Assam.
- This was being done while keeping the COVID-19 situation in mind.
- The bench relaxed the court’s May 10, 2019 direction wherein it had allowed release of detenues who had completed three years.
- The bench also reduced the personal bond required to be furnished by the detenues from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5,000.
- The Court asked them to furnish two sureties of the like amount.
- Won’t gag press: SC on Jamiat plea
- The Supreme Court declined to pass any interim directions on a plea by Jamiat Ulema-I-Hind.
- The plea was filed with a view to prevent what it claimed was the “communalisation of the Nizamuddin Markaz issue by certain sections of the print and electronic media”.
- The Court stated that it “will not gag the press”.
- SC upholds MP Governor’s decision to call for floor test
- The Supreme Court upheld Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon’s decision to ask former CM Kamal Nath to prove his government’s majority on the floor of the House.
- The Court said that “in a situation where the Governor has reasons to believe that the Council of Ministers headed by the Chief Minister has lost the confidence of the house, constitutional propriety requires that the issue be resolved by calling for a floor test”.
- HC asks Andhra govt to file counter in former SEC removal petition
- The Andhra Pradesh High Court directed the state government to file a counter-affidavit in a writ petition filed by former State Election Commissioner (SEC) Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar.
- He had filed the petition against his removal from the post.
- Why no hearing in SC on April 16: No urgent cases
- Marking an unusual working day, the Supreme Court did not have any cases to be heard on April 16.
- In view of the COVID-19 outbreak, only ‘urgent’ cases are being heard via video-conference.
- On April 16, no cases were listed for urgent hearing.
