  • Widespread practice to blame registry for no good reason: SC

    • The Supreme Court pulled up an advocate for raising “baseless and reckless allegations” against the court’s Registry.
    • That too, at a time when the staff is working “despite danger to their life and safety caused due to pandemic”.
    • The advocate had alleged that the SC Registry had delayed listing his case despite urgency pleaded by him and accused the officials of bias.
  • SC sets aside Delhi HC order that criticised NIA in Navlakha case

    • The Supreme Court set aside a Delhi High Court order of May 27, 2020.
    • The High Court order had asked the NIA to produce records of judicial proceedings before special courts in Delhi and Mumbai on the transfer of Bhima Koregaon case accused Gautam Navlakha from national capital.
    • The apex court termed the proceedings before the High Court as “totally uncalled for”.
    • It expunged remarks made by the High Court bench against the NIA in the matter.
  • 8 lakh Indians may be forced to leave Kuwait after expat quota Bill approved

    • A parliamentary committee in Kuwait approved a draft expat quota Bill.
    • It seeks to gradually slash the number of foreign workers in the Gulf country.
    • Around 8 lakh Indians could be forced to leave the country after passing of the Bill.
    • According to the Bill, Indians should not exceed 15 percent of Kuwait’s population.
  • SC seeks status report from UP on Covid cases in juvenile shelter homes

    • The Supreme Court sought a status report from the Uttar Pradesh government over reports that some inmates in Kanpur’s juvenile homes had tested positive for Covid-19.
    • The court had taken suo motu cognizance of reports about Covid 19 cases among children in conflict with the law lodged in protection homes.
  • SC asks police to produce details of probe against Vinod Dua

    • The Supreme Court directed Himachal Pradesh police to produce records of their investigation against journalist Vinod Dua.
    • He has been charged with sedition over remarks in a YouTube video.
    • The court had granted Dua interim protection from arrest on June 14.
    • The court ordered that this protection will continue for the time being.
  • Permanent Army commission for women: SC gives Centre one more month to implement order

    • The Supreme Court gave the Centre one more month to implement its direction on permanent commission for eligible women officers in the Army.
    • Allowing the extra time, the court said the Centre must ensure complete compliance with its directions.
    • The court was hearing a plea by the government, seeking six months’ more time to implement the verdict keeping in view the Covid situation.
  • Uighur exiles file case in ICC against Beijing

    • Uighur exiles urged the International Criminal Court to investigate Beijing for genocide and crimes against humanity.
    • It is the first-ever attempt to use international law to hold China’s ruling Communist Party accountable for its crackdown on the Muslim minority.

 

  • Pak claims Jadhav didn’t file appeal, India calls it ‘farce’

    • The Pakistan government said that the former Indian navy official Kulbhushan Jadhav has refused to file an appeal in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against his conviction by a military court.
    • Jadhav is on death row on charges of spying and terrorist activities in Pakistan.
    • India said that Pakistan’s claim is a “continuation of the farce” in play for the last four years.

 

  • In top court, Centre defends creation of PM CARES Fund

    • The Centre has defended the creation of the PM CARES Fund, which accepts donations for Covid relief operations.
    • It opposed the demand for transferring the amount collected to the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
    • In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the government said that National Disaster Response Fund is stipulated under Section 46 of Disaster Management Act, 2005.
    • It consists of the fund in the form of budgetary provisions made by the Central government in NDRF and state governments and Central government in State Disaster Response Funds without any private contribution.
    • The centre said, “mere existence of a statutory fund would not prohibit creation of a different fund like PM CARES Fund which provides for voluntary donations”.
  • A day after he was held, Vikas Dubey killed in shootout

    • Gangster Vikas Dubey was shot dead in an alleged encounter by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police.
    • This happened within less than 24 hours after he was arrested in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
    • Police claimed Dubey had fired at them from a weapon that he snatched from an officer after the vehicle in which he was being taken to Kanpur overturned on the highway.
    • He was killed seven days after his men had murdered eight Uttar Pradesh policemen who had gone to arrest him in his village near Kanpur.
