  • In wake of Covid-19, SC seeks rules to curb child labour
    • The Supreme Court stated that policing alone will not help prevent child labour.
    • It suggested that measures should be put in place to prevent contractors from employing children.
    • The court made the statement while hearing a plea filed by the NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan.
  • SC issues notice to Centre, J&K on Soz detention.
    • The Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir administration.
    • The notice was issued on a plea challenging Saifuddin Soz’s “house arrest” following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution.
  • Govt dues: Big relief for PSUs, telcos told to give timeframe
    • The Supreme Court said that the demand by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) from non-telecom public sector undertakings was “wholly impermissible”.
    • DoT had demanded for dues to the tune of Rs 3 lakh crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) from non-telecom public sector undertakings.
    • The order is significant since the Rs 3 lakh crore demand from non-telecom PSUs accounts for almost 65 per cent of the total Rs 4.7 lakh crore demand from all companies.
  • Deplorable, pathetic: SC slams Delhi, says state duty-bound to provide care
    • The Supreme Court strongly criticised the governments of Delhi and four other states for their handling of the Covid crisis.
    • The apex court directed them to take “immediate remedial action”.
    • It described the situation in Delhi as “deplorable and pathetic”.
    • The court expressed concern over the “grim situation” in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.
  • Law bars right to seek judicial review, says plea in top court
    • Constitutional validity of Section 4 of The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 has been challenged in the Supreme Court.
    • The petition claimed that it “has barred the right and remedy against encroachment made on religious property of Hindus” by invaders and others before August 15, 1947.
